QUICKFIRE TREBLE SETS UP WIN |
| This twice postponed East of
Scotland cup tie saw Dundee North End visit Keirs Park for the first time
since September 2005. On a heavy pitch it took both teams 15 minutes to
settle, with the Haws the first to show. The opening goal arrived on 23
minutes when Ian Hepburn drove to the edge of the box before pushing the
ball thru to Stephen Bathgate. Bathgate let it run thru before firing wide
of the Dokens keeper. The second took only three more minutes, Calum
Adamson, who was finding loads of space on the right, beat his man a
floated a cross over the keeper to Craig Smart and he headed home from 10
yards. Another three minutes had passed when the third goal went in.
Barry Smith linked with Bathgate and the latters cross was turned into his
own net by Michael Stewart. The goal of the game came on 34 minutes
following a quickfire passing move involving Smith, Hepburn, Smart and
Bathgate with the latter feeding Adamson who curled the ball into the top
corner to make it 4-0. The second half saw North End more purposeful with
their attacking and they caused the Haws a couple of problems before Smart
allowed a pass from Hepburn to run thru to Bathgate. Bathgate drove the
ball under the keeper to make it 5. The game settled to a slower pace with
both teams creating chances with no success. North End claimed their
consolation when substitute Ntie cut a low cross in from the right and
Scott McComisky finished from the edge of the box. Final score - Haws 5
Dundee North End 1. |

DERBY DAY SPOILS |
| The Haws took the trip along
the Fife coast to meet regional rivals St Andrews on a heavy pitch. The
game started in typical derby fashion with no quarter asked or given. Both
teams struggled for supremacy and the football suffered as a consequence.
With a quarter of the game played the match exploded into life in
controversial fashion. Firstly, Craig Smart attempted to shoot past the
home keeper who had reached the limits of his penalty area, the keeper
appearing to block the shot with both hands outside the area. Craig Smart
saw yellow for his part in the visitors protests. A minute later in was
the hosts turn to cry foul as Stephen Bathgate was sent through before
beating the keeper with a low drive with 21 minutes on the clock. The home
defence appealing in vain for the offside flag. The second half proceded
as the first with neither side prepared to concede an inch. Both sides had
chances to add to the goals count but it was the visitors who did so when
a free kick was awarded outside the home box. The cross in was inch
perfect for Bathgate to step onto and his close range header gave the St
Andrews keeper no chance. The game petered out but the Haws were to have
one last chance when Calum Adamson broke in to the box but was unable to
elude his marker long enough to get a shot away. Final score - St Andrews
United 0 Haws 2. |

RED CARDS AND SPOT KICKS |
| A little over a month since the
Haws dropped out of the Scottish Cup at Musselburgh, they were back on
league business. The game started in pulsating fashion with both teams
intent on attack from the start. The breakthrough came after only eight
minutes when Musselburgh striker Renton was pulled back in the Haws box
and he himself stuck away the spot kick. It was all square on 22 minutes
when Stephen Bathgate netted from the spot after Harry McGregor had tugged
him back in the act of shooting, McGregors punishment went further as he
was dismissed for the pull back. This apparent inconsistency caused
frustration amongst the home fans. The remainder of the half was played
out with the Haws pressing without further success. The second period
started much as the first had ended, with the visitors enjoying the bulk
of possession against their depleted opponents. With 68 minutes played
Kris Renton saw red as he caught Bathgate when he strode into the box,
again Bathgate picked himself up to notch his second from the spot. Four
minutes later Calum Adamson struck a twenty five yarder into the roof of
the net to extend the visitors lead and barely a minute later the hosts
chances were struck amother blow as Chris King saw his second yellow,
reducing the 'burgh to 8 men. The Haws pressed and were unlucky not to add
to their tally on a couple of occasions before Calum Adamson added his
second from the edge of the box on 84. Two minutes later the eight men
doubled their tally when a long through ball caused a mix up in the
visitors defence allowing Matti King to tap home. In time added on a shot
from Ross Allum struck the bar and dropped behind the line but none of the
officials saw this and the game played on. Final score - Musselburgh 2

BATHGATE ON THE SPOT |
| A typical derby between two sides
currently on form. The hosts enjoyed the better of the opening period with
Clark Kay and Conrad Courts finding lots of space on their left. With 23
minutes on the clock Courts found space to drive a low cross into the box
and the ball cannoned into the net off Darrin Wright to open the scoring.
As the half progressed the visitors came more into the game and indeed,
they enjoyed a spell of pressure as the half drew to a close. The second
half started a more even affair but things were to turn in the Haws favour
just after the hour mark, Stephen Bathgate stabbed the ball past Kelty
keeper Fleming and as there was contact the referee pointed to the spot
and dismissed the home stopper. Graeme Findlay took over the custodians
role but could do nothing to prevent Bathgate levelling from the spot
kick. With the extra man advantage the visitors now enjoyed the bulk of
possession but were unable to find a way past a solid Kelty rearguard.
Final score Kelty 1 Haws 1. |

SMART AT THE DOUBLE AGAINST BO'NESS |
| Another pitch inspection after rain
on the Friday but, although heavy, the park was playable. The first half
was a very even affair with both teams probing for an opening. The
underfoot conditions and solid defending by both teams saw chances limited
and they returned to the dressing rooms as it had began. The second half
started with the visitors pushing the Haws back as they sought the
breakthrough, all to no avail. The Haws did take hold of the game after an
hour and it was their turn to ask all the questions. The breakthrough came
in 73 minutes, Barry Smith played a ball through in the direction of
Stephen Bathgate. Bathgate was offside and made no attempt to move for the
ball, as the visiting defence hesitated Craig Smart broke through to
collect the ball before rounding two defenders and planting the ball
firmly behind Scott Christie in the Bo'ness goal. This lifted the hosts
and they dominated play as they sought a second and clinching goal. With
nine minutes remaining a cross field ball from Chris Seeley was taken down
by Bathgate and his early ball into Smart saw the striker double his tally
by rifling the ball home. Bo'ness rallied late on and nearly scored a
consolation but the ball came off the post before being cleared. Final
score - Haws 2 Bo'ness 0. |

SPOILS SHARED IN PULSATING CLASH |
| Heavy rain late on Friday had left
the Keirs Park surface a little heavy. An early inspection saw th egame go
ahead. Both teams were up for it from the off and chances came and went
for both sides as solid defending coupled with top drawer goalkeeping
somehow kept the game goalless. The breakthrough came on 31 minutes when
Craig Robertson strode forward for the visitors to fire an unstoppable 30
yard drive into the roof of the net. The Haws tested the visitors keeper a
couple of times before the break but their efforts went unrewarded. The
Haws changed their shape at half time with Aaron Hay replacing Darrin
Wright as the host started the second period with three at the back. The
Haws almost went ahead early on but Michael Gemmell saw his shot cannon
off the bar and bounce away. With only ten minutes of the second half
played Michael Gemmell saw red for a second yellow card, the card awarded
for a fairly innocuous tackle. This seemed to lift the home side and
within three minutes they were level. Stephen Bathgate was tripped in the
box and he picked himself up to fire home. A couple of balls into the
visitors box saw some last ditch defending as the ball bounced around the
area only for Stephen Vanderdeyal to fall gratefully on to it. With seven
minutes remaining, Lochee broke up the left and the ball into Marc O'Leary
was dispatched with aplomb. From the kick off the Haws threw
everyone forward and were nearly caught out as Lochee broke with four
against two, Danny Kelly and Stewart Haddow raced back to clear the danger
as the Lochee forwards poised to shoot. The ball out of defence ended up
with Calum Adamson who played a one-two with Barry Smith before racing
past two defenders to the bye line. His deep cross was powerfully headed home by
Stephen Bathgate to level the game. Final score Haws 2 Lochee United 2. |

NOT AT RACES IN MUSSELBURGH |
| Musselburgh scored in 4 minutes
when Matti King burst through the middle to score from 12 yards and when
Brian Murray struck from 30 yards with only 13 minutes played it looked
all over for a Haws side yet to reach starting point. The hosts continued
to look the livelier as the first half progressed, keeping the Haws
rearguard on their toes. The Haws did find their feet and were unlucky to
see a shot come back off the post and a Stephen Bathgate strike went just
wide. Muted shouts for a penalty were heard when the home keeper grabbed
both of Craig Smarts legs but the Haws man stayed on his feet with the
ball being cleared. The second half saw more of the Haws as an attacking
force with the burgh content to protect their lead although when the hosts
did move forward their front three were more than a handful. Chances came
and went for the Haws as time ebbed away then with 6 minutes left Chris
Seeley struck from 30 yards and the push for a leveller saw the visitors
almost camp in the burgh half for the remainder of the game, but to no
avail. Final score - Musselburgh 2 Haws 1. |

BATHGATE SPOT ON |
| League duty took the Haws to
Carmuirs Park, a ground at which they had not won a league fixture, to
face Camelon. There was little to separate the sides early on with both
sides testing each other but with defences on top. The breakthrough came
late in the first half when Stephen Bathgate played the ball past the
Camelon keeper and found himself dumped on the ground when he tried to
vault over the prone stoper. The referee awarded the penalty and also saw
fit to harshly red card the home number one. Bathgate himself stepped up
to slot past the replacement keeper. The second half was ten minutes old
when Camelon had a good penalty shout waved away and in their protests saw
Steven Graham booked. The visitors lead was doubled on 62 minutes when
Andrew McGowan tripped Bathgate, a second spot kick was awarded, and
dispatched, by Stephen Bathgate. The visitors were over-running
their hosts with the man advantage and should have added to their tally a
few times before Bathgate notched his third. A determined run through the
middle by the trialist, DK, opened up the home rearguard and his pass to
Bathgate was perfect to allow the striker to take the ball round the
keeper and slot into an empty net. Final score - Camelon 0 Haws 3. |
