HAWS 2 EDINBURGH SOUTH 3
Haws rang the changes for this opening League Cup Group F clash with game time given to players who had not seen much action in recent weeks, as well as first starts for promising Under 20’s prospects Ethan Bauld and Cammy Bell. The Conference B visitors arrived occupying a mid-table berth.
As expected there was little fluency to the home side in the early stages of the match, as they looked to adjust to their unfamiliar line-up. However, the first chance of the game did fall to the Haws, with Aaron Hamilton needing to be sharp off his line to gather the ball off Callum Adamson.
Play quickly then switched to the other end, and it took a fine double save from Stuart Hall to deny Ainslie Hunter the opener. It proved to be a short respite for the homesters, though, as in the seventh minute Stuart Martin slotted home to give the men from the capital a shock lead.
Hill of Beath did not offer a lot in response at this time, the closest to a reply coming from Michael Fleming who fired over from some distance. Gary Hamilton really should have increased the visitors lead on 20 minutes, but he headed over with the goal at his mercy.
With 32 minutes on the clock Hunter had the opportunity to double his tally for the day, but on this occasion he drove wide. Five minutes later the Haws finally had an attack of substance when Paul Quinn fed Adamson, but he drove just wide of the target. The returning from suspension Shaun Leishman then got in on the act with a long 40th minute throw that was dropped by Aaron Hamilton, but the keeper redeemed himself when he won the ball back from Quinn as he attempted to stab home the loose ball.
Three minutes before the break Sean Jamieson drove the ball underneath the body of Hall to increase the visitors lead and the only further action of a woeful half for the Haws was a Cammy Bell effort which was charged down by the visiting defence.

Ross Allum and Michael Watt were both introduced for the second period as the Haws sought an instant response. The first action of the half saw the home side awarded a free-kick, but Lee Reid’s low drilled effort was straight at Hamilton. The same player had a go from distance in the 53rd minute, but his effort was wide of the target.
With 65 minutes played Quinn’s header was cleared off of the line, in what was the Haws closest effort so far. But seven minutes later they finally opened their account. Leishman’s cross was headed on by Quinn and Lewis Elder was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range.
Two minutes later it looked as if the home side would, after all, take something from the tie when substitute Johnny Galloway swept the ball home with a curling effort from the left that levelled up the match.
Lyle Kellichan then went close as the Haws looked to complete the turnaround, and with 15 minutes remaining Quinn fired just over with a decent effort.
The visitors still looked a threat on the counter, however, and in the 77th minute Hall had to deny Jamieson at point blank range.
The game was now real end-to-end stuff, totally different from the drab affair that we had seen for the first hour of the match, with Elder firing wide at one end, followed by another brilliant save from Hall at the other end moments later.
In the 84th minute Ross Allum’s free-kick was straight at Hamilton, but just a minute later what turned out to be the winner for the visitors arrived. It was Scott Jamieson who hit the double, with a long range effort that flew over Hall into the top corner of the net.
In fairness it was no less than the industrious visitors deserved, and although Elder again went close before the final whistle, the home side were left with nothing from a game where perhaps game time and the blooding of young players were more important than the final scoreline.
