MATCH REPORT by Dave Edler

HAWS 4 DUNBAR UNITED 0

Before kick-off a minutes silence was held for longtime Haws supporter Sonny Gill who sadly passed away three weeks ago. Sonny followed The Haws from the very beginning in 1975 and will always be remembered for being an avid critic of referees!! RIP Sonny.

The Haws impressive start to 2022 continued with this comprehensive victory against one of the other teams around them battling to avoid the drop. The victory never looked in doubt from the early stages of the match and the home faithful started to dream of mid-table comfort in the weeks ahead.

The home fans had barely settled into their regular spots on the terraces before they were already celebrating the first Haws goal, Calum Adamson calmly slotting home from 15 yards out after just three minutes.

Any hopes the visitors had a making a fast response were quickly dashed after Ryan Connelly beat the Dunbar offside trap just eight minutes later before racing through and beating Daniel Laing with a composed finish.

Daniel Watt could have added to the home tally when he went close with a clever back flick, while at the other end of the park United finally had an effort on target when Jamie Devlin’s effort was charged down for a corner. There was a further scare for the Haws when Fraser Neave’s effort flashed across the face of the home goal, but by the 24th minute the points were as good as in the bag.

Johnny Galloway caught Laing off his line with a looping effort that may have initially been intended as a cross, but ended up in the back of the visitors net all the same!

Ross Allum then tried to add his name to the scoresheet but he was well off target with his first effort, before firing straight at Laing from a good position in front of goal from where he perhaps should have done better.

Half-Time: Haws 3 Dunbar United 0.

The second half started with the home side still in dominant mood and this time Allum was genuinely unlucky when his 51st minute effort was superbly kept out by Laing at point blank range. Michael Watt then attempted to get in on the act, but his long range drive was held by the visiting stopper.

In a rare foray forward for the visitors, Bob Berry headed straight at Stuart Hall with an hour on the clock.

Two minutes later Daniel Watt found the side netting, but the home faithful did not have long to wait before cheering another goal, Calum Adamson adding his second of the match in the 71st minute with an effort that went in off the post.

There was a chance for Dunbar to bag a consolation eight minutes later, but Steven Thomson’s header failed to seriously trouble Hall.

The action was completed in the final minute, when Haws substitute Paul Quinn’s first time effort was well kept out by Laing.

All in all it was a comprehensive victory for the Haws, who now move on to commence their delayed league cup campaign.
