TYNECASTLE 1 HAWS 6

The headline makes good reading for all Haws fans, but it was a crucial save by Stuart Hall just after half-time that proved to be the turning point in this vital fixture.

With Shaun Leishman suspended Russell Grierson returned to the defence following injury, however it was to prove a largely quiet night for the Haws back line. On the terrace of the Boroughmuir clubhouse that towers over one end of Meggetland, a crowd of revellers in evening suits enjoyed the early moments of this game before disappearing inside for their function. I’m sure their meal was good, but they would have had an even better night if they had stayed outside to watch the Haws!

The visitors opened the game with real intensity, determined it seemed to immediately banish the demons from their previous league outing against Newtongrange Star. It took just five minutes for them to open the scoring. After good work in the box from Daniel Watt, the scuffed clearance fell straight to the feet of Ross Allum who atoned for his penalty miss a week earlier with a fine strike. Moments later Lewis Elder was denied by a decent stop from Murray Jackson as the Haws threatened to overwhelm the homesters.

Tynecastle finally had a foray forward in the 15th minute when Fletcher Hendry crossed for Ryan Cameron but he drove over. At the other end Allum again went close with a shot on the turn, while Daniel Watt’s scooped effort was only gathered by Jackson at the second attempt. However it would not be long before the second goal arrived, Ryan Connelly showing great physical strength before driving powerfully to the net in the 22nd minute.

Four minutes later Allum’s header cannoned off the crossbar to safety, while at the other end Hall saved smartly from Taylor Hendry. Elder again went close before the interval and the home side also saw their best chance so far when Arran Ponton drove narrowly wide across the face of the Haws goal.

Half-Time: Tynecastle 0 Haws 2

The home side must have had strong words during the interval as they started the second period with much more purpose.

Cameron’s effort a minute after the re-start was superbly blocked by Russell Grierson and two minutes later the pivotal moment arrived as Stuart Hall somehow kept the ball out from Taylor Hendry at point blank range. It proved crucial as from the resulting clearance the Haws raced upfield and Lyle Kellichan stole in to notch the visitors third.

That goal appeared to knock the stuffing out of the home side and just two minutes later Jonny Galloway showed amazing footwork to waltz around the home defence and superbly slot home the fourth.

Ross Allum posed problems for Tynecastle all game and in the 55th minute his well struck first time effort found Jackson at full stretch to keep him out. But the Haws were not to be denied a fifth as Jake Mitchell headed home Calum Adamson’s 64th minute corner.

There was still time for more trickery from Galloway, this time setting up substitute Paul Quinn for his second goal of the week in the 72nd minute. The one disappointment will have been the goal conceded two minutes later as Taylor Hendry’s close range header denied the Haws a clean sheet. However, it was job done at the second attempt after the original match between the sides was abandoned due to floodlight failure with the Haws 2-0 up. This time, however, there was nothing to save the hosts.
